Short story

Year 2000 – The chaos started 2 hours ago, I’m still in shock, nobody thought this could happen. All the members of the secret agency, including myself, started to blame. We could not trust anyone anymore.

The place still had smoke, it was so difficult to breathe and everybody wanted to go out just to feel air through their lungs. The civilians that were here, while the robbery happened, had to stay in the building in front of the big clock, just to give statements to the cops of what they saw. I’m sure most of them couldn’t notice what was going on because of the white smoke that suddenly appeared.

Me and the other detectives were searching for some evidence, but it was hard to find something, even to get to the place when the clock was taken. That clock was really famous, it was a relic, the watchmaker told everybody that the clock was designed to work forever. The clock was made in the 17th Century and it was still working. It was placed on a tall tower in the city.

The only evidence that we could find was a wrench, motorcycle prints, and a note. The note had a name, which was of a famous thief called “Mouse”. Mouse had robbed many huge things before such as art pieces and jewels. The clock seemed impossible to steal, but as Mouse wrote on a note before, nothing was impossible for him.

But while we were working on the crime a mysterious guy appeared, he told our boss he knew Mouse, and that he would help us to find him, everybody was amazed and could not understand why he was there to help. He explained he wanted to help because he was jealous of him, they had “worked” together one time, but Mouse refused to pay as he promised.

The man took us to the place where Mouse was hidden, the clock was there, and we all were surprised when we noticed that the clock had stopped. Then, Mouse talked with us, while we were surprised, he explained he used to steal things in order to preserve its romanticism and illusions.

As he said, he used to steal things which people liked and had a special meaning for them. Like the clock, people thought the clock would not stop, but in fact it was going to stop the day that he stole it. He did it because he didn’t want to see people disappointed.

We felt touched by those ideas, and decided to let him free. The documents that contained the whole story about the robbery were taken from the agency by my boss and the man.
We let time pass and the culprit was not found. They threw the documents into the fire. No one would ever know their secret.
